The LEGO Group's most innovative and most prestigious new release of the past decade has been officially presented at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. Being a technology-packed show of products, it's no surprise that LEGO have revealed its latest revolutionary technology: LEGO SMART Play.
LEGO SMART Play is a new interactive platform that brings LEGO creations to life like never before. The platform is powered by the LEGO SMART Brick - a normal 2x4 LEGO brick packed full of ground-breaking, world-first technologies. This includes the piece having dynamically reacting lights, a colour recognition scanner, a sound synthesiser and a built-in accelerometer.
All of these highly complicated elements are packed into a 4.1mm ASIC chip found inside the SMART Brick. The LEGO Group states that this chip is smaller than a standard LEGO stud, allowing unimaginable play possibilities without interfering with the usual LEGO building experience. This technology allows the brick to detect how it's held, moved, tilted, thrown through the air, and so much more.
Alongside the smartest LEGO brick of all time, LEGO SMART Play also includes SMART Tags and SMART Minifigures. SMART Tags are 2x2 tiles which tell the SMART Brick what to become and how to react. These tags are somewhat similar to the LEGO Super Mario technology, controlling and informing the Smart Brick, but not making any sounds or cool lighting effects themselves.
SMART Minifigures, meanwhile, bring our favourite characters to life in brick-built LEGO form like never before. The SMART Play technology allows each figure to have its own personality and react differently with unique sounds, moods and reactions depending on the situation. Similar to the tags, the modified, technology-packed Minifigures don't make any sounds but inform the SMART Brick how to react.
SMART Play will become a major focus across LEGO’s entire portfolio, spanning from 4+ Friends sets to Technic, as well as licensed themes including Pokémon, Star Wars, and Animal Crossing. Beyond physical builds and interactions, SMART Play is designed to connect to apps and games, offering experiences that can potentially integrate with platforms such as Fortnite or Nintendo games.
LEGO’s vision for 2026 is to expand and integrate SMART Bricks and its associated technology across all themes and product lines, making SMART Play a central part of the LEGO experience. It will be company-wide wide creating a unique, interactive and hybrid play experience across nearly every set from classic LEGO themes to licensed IPs.
The first theme to get the LEGO SMART Play treat is the ever-popular LEGO Star Wars line. Eight SMART Play-branded sets are reportedly releasing on the 1st of March 2026 for the licensed LEGO theme, with three of these already being presented at CES 2026:
75421 Darth Vader's TIE Fighter ($69.99 / €69.99 / £59.99) - 473 pieces
75423 Luke's Red Five X-Wing ($89.99 / €89.99 / £79.99) - 584 pieces
75427 Throne Room Duel & A-Wing ($159.99 / €159.99 / £139.99) - 962 pieces
