In less than two months, the Formula 1 World Championship will return with the first race in Australia, and to coincide with the international sports return, a new LEGO set will be hitting shelves on the 1st of March 2026. The LEGO and Formula 1 partnership continues to go from strength as, along with the likes of 77252 APXGP Team Race Car from F1 The Movie, the LEGO Technic theme will also be getting a new F1 set in 2026: 42228 McLaren F1 Car.
Just like previous LEGO Technic Formula 1 sets, 42228 recreates the McLaren F1 team's car in a brick-built 1:8 scale, retailing for $229.99 / €229.99 / £199.99 and includes 1,675 pieces. Last year saw the release of both 42207 Ferrari SF-24 F1 Car and 42206 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20 F1 Car, but 42228 returns to the papaya coloured McLaren Formula 1 team at the start of another regulation cycle.
And just like 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car, which released at the start of 2022, 2026's 42228 will likely recreate the base 2026 car featuring the McLaren's team livery from the 2025 season due to the real car not being revealed until nearer the start of the season. Either way, the $230 model will likely be the most detailed LEGO Technic F1 set yet, with that high piece count of 1,675 beating previous Technic Formula 1 models.
The 18+ model will cleverly capture the aerodynamic body of Formula 1 cars in brick-built LEGO form, including a sculpted nose, front and rear wings, sidepods and a detailed engine cover. The iconic papaya colour associated with McLaren will feature heavily on the car, along with the constructors champions' many sponsors. The build will also be complete with Pirelli-branded tyres, functional steering and an adjustable flap on the rear wing for DRS.
