Happy Mario Day, brick-builders, as the LEGO Group are celebrating the iconic Nintendo character with a brand new set reveal. In particular, this is 72050 Mario Kart - Luigi & Mach 8, which has been officially presented following its initial social media tease in January. 72050 will become the first LEGO Super Mario set of 2026, as LEGO has put a lot of its gaming budget towards the debut year of the LEGO Pokémon theme.
The latest 18+ set for the licensed gaming theme releases on the 1st of April 2026 and is the perfect companion to last year's extremely popular 72037 Mario Kart - Mario & Standard Kart. 72050 Mario Kart - Luigi & Mach 8, however, retails for $10 more at $179.99 / €179.99 / £159.99 but also includes almost 300 more pieces at a piece count of 2,234. These pieces create a large-scale brick-built version of the character Luigi driving his Mach 8 kart, which first appears in the Wii U's Mario Kart 8
The build for Luigi is very similar to Mario from 72037, but with obvious differences in the character's face and clothing. Luigi has a longer and slightly thinner face, still complete with printed blue eyes, a large printed L on his green hat and his iconic mustache which is again slightly different to his brothers' and utilises a new piece. The plumber turned racer is then complete with his green and dark blue dungarees, yellow buttons, brown shoes and white gloves.
Again, like Mario, Luigi is permanently seated in his brick-built LEGO kart, but there is movement in the gaming character's face, arms and hands to recreate the signature cheering pose. The kart build perfectly recreates the Mach 8, which resembles both a jet with a turbine-shaped grille and a Formula 1 car from the 1950s. Coloured in its usual mix of blue and yellow, the vehicle is larger and more sturdy than Mario's Standard Kart
The wheels in particular are especially big with some exclusive red, black and grey printing on the wheel covers. Two of the biggest play features of the 18+ model are the ability to actually move and drive the car, with the ability to use the steering wheel to turn left and right. Meanwhile, the vibrant brick-built flame exhaust at the back of Mach 8 spins automatically as the vehicle moves. All of this is placed on a black stand, reminiscent of the one seen in 72037 Mario Kart - Mario & Standard Kart.
